Location: Hunan Dynasty restaurant

Washington, D.C.
Event: Fundraiser for Congressman Mike Honda, 15th Congressional District

Sponsored by Friends of Mike Honda

You are cordially invited to join the Asian American and Pacific Islander community for a fundraising reception for Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA), who is running for re-election. Congressman Honda has been an effective and important leader during his first term. A member of the powerful Budget, Transportation and Science Committees, Mike has:

bulletco-authored legislation to increase funding for cyber security, to encourage telecommunications companies to provide broadband access to underserved areas, and to create tax incentives for high-tech companies to conduct long-term R&D research
bulletco-sponsored legislation to reduce class-size, to increase funding for special education, to create tax incentives for school construction and modernization, and to improve technology in the schools
bulletco-authored legislation to improve security against terrorist attacks, while safe-guarding constitutional rights and liberties

In addition, Mike has been a particularly visible and vocal advocate for the Asian Pacific American community. As Vice-Chair of the Congressional APA Caucus, he has worked hard for the APA community. His work includes:

bulletco-authoring a congressional resolution condemning hate crimes against Sikh-Americans
bulletco-authoring legislation to protect the jobs of non-citizen airport screeners (a significant portion of whom are AAPIs)
bulletbattling syndicated columnist Anne Coulter on her racially offensive statements against Secretary Norman Mineta
bulletworking hard to secure funding for the White House Initiative on AAPIs
bulletleading the charge in seeking an apology from the Japanese government to comfort women during WWII
bulletproviding concrete assistance to AAPI candidates around the country

Rep. Honda needs financial support from DC's AAPI community. In 2000, he won a hard-fought and expensive election. This year, although his prospects for re-election are solid, he has a considerable challenge ahead of him. The California redistricting process introduced over 260,000 new residents into his district, which means that 41% of his district will be new to him. Congressman Honda needs your financial assistance in order to reach out effectively to these new constituents.

Please help Mike reach out to these new voters by joining us on the evening of April 10th. Guests are asked to make a contribution of $100 or more (payable to "Mike Honda for Congress") to Mike's re-election campaign. Please RSVP by April 5th to RChiang@aol.com. We look forward to seeing you!
